Keeping Up With Your Skincare Resolutions in 2018
As we head into the second month of the new year, it's easy for well-intentioned New Year's resolutions to fall by the wayside. Don't worry too much about it. We've rounded up a few quick and easy tips to help you stick with those skincare resolutions and leave you glowing throughout the entirety of 2018. And if you slip up and forget these too, remember not to be too hard on yourself. We're belatedly declaring 2018 the year of self-kindness and self-care.
Assess the products you currently use
The new year is a great time to take stock of what you’re putting in and on your body. Remember to check the ingredients list on every product you use to be sure that you aren’t slathering on any artificial or synthetic “filler” ingredients that can be harmful for your skin and that each product on your top shelf is cruelty free and ethically made. It feels good to be confident in your self-care routine.
Don't skimp on the moisturizer
This sounds like an obvious step, but it can be easy to forget. A good moisturizer will keep you hydrated and smooth, and help your skin retain water. Try to make sure you are using a moisturizer at least every time you cleanse your face. If you wear makeup, moisturized skin also helps create a better base for foundations and other face products. The Borage + Botanicals Hydration Cream Concentrate is our most intense hydration formula yet. Try a small amount on clean skin in the morning, or a little bit more during the evening for a deep moisture night treatment.
Add in a face serum
Think of face serums like vitamins for your skin. Adding them into your routine is a great way to give you that extra boost of skin loving nutrients. The Orchid + Blackcurrant Face Serum is a favorite because it uses orchid extract, a powerful antioxidant and humectant that moisturizes and soothes skin while helping to reduce the look of fine lines. Especially in the winter, a moisturizing serum can be vital for reviving dull, parched skin.
Get more sleep
While improving mental alertness and body function, getting more sleep at night will also work wonders for your skin. While you sleep, your body speeds up its metabolic process to rid itself of toxins and produces collagen, which strengthens and improves your skin by replacing dead skin cells. Sleeping also increases blood flow to your skin, which means getting too little of it could lead to your skin looking dull and dry. So, try to schedule in a few more hours and see how your skin improves. During particularly stressful times when late nights are unavoidable, fake it with the Carrot Seed + Rosehip Eye Serum to help fade and prevent those telltale dark circles.
Drink more water
Drinking enough water is essential for keeping your skin hydrated, but it also helps keep it clear as it helps flush toxins out of your body. If you’re not used to drinking a lot of water everyday, try sprucing it up with a few fruit slices or sprigs of mint to make it a little more interesting. There are also certain apps you can download to help you remember to drink enough every day (like Waterlogged), or you can just set an alarm on your phone to remind you to drink up every couple of hours. If you have been skimping on the water intake lately, try a few drops of face oil like the Helichrysum + Violet Fortifying Face Oil to restore and strengthen dehydrated skin. Just warm a few drops in the palm of your hand and press over your face in small, upward motions.
Create a tailored, manageable routine
It’s important to determine what works for your specific skin type and lifestyle. By identifying what your skin needs, you can identify what will work best for you in a skincare routine. A good guideline to follow is cleanse, treat, and moisturize, so choose a product for each step based on the current condition of your skin. For example, if you wear a lot of makeup or have sensitive skin, try the Blue Yarrow + Geranium Cleansing Oil to dissolve every trace of makeup at the end of the day. If you struggle with congested skin, choose the Charcoal + Aloe Face Cleanser to help draw out pollutants from your pores without overdrying. Then, add a serum, exfoliant, and moisturizer based on your needs as well. Just be sure to reassess your skin type every few months as it can easily change with the weather, your stress levels, age, etc. Sticking with a routine will give your skin consistency and help you reap the full benefits of your products.
