Practice self-care this winter with the cozy art of Hygge

Hygge (pronounced hue-guh) is a Danish word with no exact English translation. The closest we can come to describing it is the feeling of being comfortable, cozy, and content with ourselves and our surroundings. Hygge can be practiced alone or in the company of close friends. Either way, it’s all about creating an environment that allows you to slow down, quiet your mind, and appreciate the small comforts in front of you.  Picture yourself wrapped in a thick, cozy blanket, feet propped up in front of a roaring fire, sipping a steaming hot cup of glögg, and reading your favorite book while snow pours down outside your window. This is hygge.

There’s no one way to practice hygge. What matters is what makes you comfortable and present in the moment. However, here are some helpful tips to remember when attempting to reach peak coziness this winter.

1. Lighting is everything.

Altering the lighting will alter your mood. None of the harsh, fluorescent lights that remind you of an office or classroom. Instead, light a few candles to surround yourself with a warm glow and subtle scent. The White Tea + Amber Soy Candle is a favorite for its fresh, invigorating white tea and rich, earthy amber. Perfect for transforming an everyday space into a cozy retreat. Whatever scents you prefer, light those candles and breathe in deep.

2. Unplug.

Take your phone and laptop and leave them charging in a different room. There’s no space for work emails or distracting texts when practicing hygge. Plus, the artificial glow of your phone screen will totally kill the mood. Instead, try journaling or reading a book if you’re alone. Simply focus on good conversation if you’re with friends.

3. Feed your sweet tooth.

It’s important to take the time to listen to what your body wants. Nothing feels cozier than sipping a steaming mug of cocoa, tea, or mulled wine. Snuggling up with something warm in your hands while it’s cold outside sounds like the perfect way to spend a Friday night. If you’re a fan of subtly sweet, spicy drinks, try a golden milk latte. The ginger and pepper give it a little kick to help warm you up, plus the turmeric has tons of health benefits as it’s a natural anti-inflammatory. Don’t get too concerned with health benefits during hygge, though, since the ultimate purpose is to focus on what feels good for your soul, just as much as your body.

Recipe:

  • Start simmering a cup or two of almond milk (or whatever milk you prefer) in a saucepan
  • Add 1–2 teaspoons of turmeric powder
  • Add 1–2 teaspoons of ground ginger (or freshly grated ginger root)
  • Add a dash of black pepper
  • Add a dash of cinnamon
  • Add 1–2 teaspoons (or however much you want) of honey or maple syrup
  • Whisk it all up and pour into mug
  • Enjoy!

4. Make a playlist.

Pick all the mellow songs that you love (but don’t make you too sad) and have them playing softly in the background. If songs with words are too distracting, try classical music. If music doesn’t help you relax at all, you can just focus on the sounds of a crackling fire or the absence of incoming email notifications.

5. Be kind to yourself and your skin.

It’s important that you feel comfortable and taken care of—this includes your skin. Moisturizing is key, especially during these cold winter months. Try a face mask like the Calendula + Lycopene Hydration Mask that delivers deep moisture while forcing you to sit and relax for at least 15 minutes. Follow up with the Borage + Botanicals Hydration Cream Concentrate to deeply nourish and hydrate your skin. This concentrate is LBA’s most intensive hydration formula, created with 8 botanicals (like aloe vera and rose), as well as highly reparative borage oil and olive squalene. Just apply a thin layer and massage in an upward motion over face to quench your parched winter skin and leave you feeling restored and rejuvenated.

6. Take it with you.

As your hygge sadly comes to an end, don’t forget the way it made you feel as you enter back into everyday life. Take a small memento with you as a reminder to slow down and regularly take a few moments for yourself. This can be as simple as toting around a small bottle of your favorite essential oil in your bag or spritzing yourself with the Rose + Juniper Aromatic Hair Mist or Coconut + Mint Cooling Mineral Mist throughout the day. Keeping a subtle scent halo around you can help you hold onto a bit of that hygge feeling until the next time you can wrap yourself in a blanket and settle in.
